Charles Schwab Review

I have used Charles Schwab for almost 5 years now, and I find their services to be above par. The trading fees are somewhat higher than their rivals, however, their customer support is very knowledgeable and they have a solid online trading platform. One advantage to using Charles Schwab for a discount broker is they have actual locations you can deposit and withdraw checks from your account. eTrade and Trade King do not have this feature forcing customers to wire money, which can become expensive.

If you're looking for a decent middle of the road broker, with moderate fees, and a little advice you've found it.

High margin rates

Schwab's best margin rate is 6%. Etrade, for comparision, is 4%. When T-bills are yielding less than 1%, getting 6% for a fully secured, riskless loan is usurious.

STAY AWAY FROM SCHWAB!!!

I've had the WORST EXPERIENCE WITH SCHWAB. First, they falsified my info I'd given to the guy who opened my acct. They did not return my calls. They also messed up funds wired out AND, WORST OF ALL, their client advocacy managers REFUSED to answer questions about concerns I had regarding their system. I sent numerous requests on their website which went unacknowledged or when they were acknowledged were not answered. The system and the people are SUBSTANDARD and a MESS. Inquiries are not archived, and when they do answer they do not address the problem or question AND DO NOT SHOW THE original question(s) in the string. So after twenty nine "replies" and email exchanges, I have not received answers to my questions. Am in touch with the A.G.O.'s office, and all other regulatory agencies. The employees I talked to are totally incompetent, especially those who call themselves managers. They are unbelievably incompetent.
STAY AWAY AND SAVE YOUR TIME AND NERVES.
I am sure Mr. Schwab does not know about much of this for they REFUSE TO FORWARD TO HIM THE PROBLEMS. So now, he will have to find out from the outside about what's going on inside his company.

I have had my IRA with Schwab since 2001. I mostly do my own trading and they have executed my stock trades well. For mutual funds they have their preferred "Schwab One" list which allows clients to buy load funds commission free. The quality of the funds on this list is mixed but saving the commission helps in total returns. I don't really go to their reps for advice though I know they are there, which is nice if I ever do need one. The written advice is pretty good and they don't send any spam. Overall I've been pleased with Schwab.

Poor Customer Service

Charles Schwab online account reporting is extremely inaccurate. Even worse, their customer service representatives have no concern for the customer and back the company. It is extremely frustrating to have erroneous numbers with no recourse. I will probably transfer my accounts to Fidelity.

Charles Schwab
Per their recommendations they placed after taxed money into an IRA. They ARE THE WORST, the people are SUBSTANDARD and are in incompetent and lazy. Instead of correcting the problem created by opening a IRA for taxed money they suggested I withdraw it and pay the taxes AGAIN. They kept saying I signed the forms, which I did, based on their recommendations, I had no idea about these things, that why I consulted Schwab. Apparently they have on idea about these things also.
